Did The BCS Get it Right???

I have long been a proponent of a playoff system...old news.
I have long stated my dislike for the current setup to determine a national champeen (sic) in college football...more old news
I'm also not shy of publicly stating my intense dislike (I wont call it hatred, I save that for Louisville) of Ohio State...still more old news
What I will say will likely drop some jaws and I preface this with the caveat that I'm saying this grudgingly.

The BCS got it right.

The teams that are in the title game, deserve to be right where they are.

You almost can hear the dulcet tones of John Popper and Blues Traveler singing "The mountains win again." In this case, the mountains are the powers that be in the BCS. The grinning jeering powers that sneer at us and tell us "You idiots, thats why we're the experts. WE know what's best for you and college football." They tell us further that the system works and that there is no reason to change it. They still however keep their collective fingers crossed every year that it works out. And for now, it has...
As I tend to do, I'll roll my eyes and continue to lob brickbats at the system, but its still a ticking time bomb.

Ohio State is slotted at #1, no real argument here. At 11-1 and undisputed Big Ten (Great Midwest) champs. They have no one that can quibble with them being in the top slot. They were the benefactor of Mizzou getting an expected slaughter by Oklahoma. Lets face facts the Tigers looked very much like stage frightened kitties in the Big 12 Championship. Rest assured that you will see Chase Daniel and his Columbia gang back in the championship next year, if they can get by their Jayhawk nemesis. But they did get the shaft on the Bowl. Kansas goes to a BCS bowl and Mizzou doesn't??? No knock to Illinois, but Mizzou should be going to the Rose Bowl, and the Illini should be headed to the Cotton. Mizzou beat Kansas, yet the Jayhawks get the BCS nod. Thats not right.

LSU is the #2 team, some may brook an argument here. But I have to say, LSU won the SEC and the BCS bid that goes with it. Put any of the other BCS qualifiers here and they fail the litmus test against LSU.
VA Tech? The Hokies got the giblets beat out of them in September by LSU.
USC? Two losses and still trying to explain away that inexcusable defeat by Stanford.
Oklahoma? When you can explain to me the loss to Texas Tech, you can get them in.
West Virginia? They had the legit title shot in their hands and were ambushed by Pitt...at home.
Georgia? You're going to give a team that didn't even win its conference division a title shot? Had that happened even the most fervent BCS apologist (ya'll know who you are) would be at a serious loss to explain them as a legitimate title contender.
Hawai'i? As much love as I have for the Rainbow Warriors, their lightweight schedule doesn't make them legit either. I'd have given last years Boise State squad as more of a credible BCS title game worthy team than Hawai'i is this year. The Rainbow Warriors get a well deserved BCS slot, but not a title shot.

So there you have it. Through gritted teeth, I give grudging dap to the BCS this year. They did get the protagonists for the BCS title game right. Now we have a month and five days to debate who will win and why. And we have a plethora of bowl games to dissect before the big game.

My next post will be Wednesday with the Phat Dap/Head Slap as well as handicapping one of the most wide open and diverse Heisman races in recent memory. Until Next Post Fellow Sports Fans!!!
